June 2012: Global Climate Change: Predictions, Policy, and Planning

   
This June Coastal Issues Forum (scheduled for June 4th) will address the state of the art in climate change data, models, and predictions. We will consider potential climate impacts at the global, regional, and local scales, with a particular focus on the Gulf region and the Coastal Bend. We will provide an update on the state and national policy response to these impacts and will provide specific examples of how some communities are responding at the local level in the form of GHG Management and Climate Adaptation plans. Finally, we will discuss the steps to initiating this type of planning in Corpus Christi.
The forum will feature will feature guest speaker Jeannie Renne-Malone, Director of Greenhouse Gas Management Services, HDR.

About the speaker:
Jeannie Renné-Malone, LEED AP
Director, Greenhouse Gas Consulting Services,
HDR
 
Jeannie leads HDR’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management Program, providing leadership and guidance across HDR’s engineering and architecture businesses in GHG management and climate change services. She develops GHG inventories for communities and organizations, working with them to identify policies and technologies to reduce GHG emissions. She also helps clients explore carbon financing options to implement projects and assists them in interpreting and navigating anticipated climate change and energy legislation. She is working with several cities throughout the U.S. on developing energy management and climate action plans through the DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program and was a member of the team that completed the City of Corpus Christi’s first Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.

Prior to joining HDR, Jeannie managed the Latin America program for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, focused on renewable energy project implementation and climate change policy issues. Jeannie is fluent in Spanish and has a MA in International Finance and Development from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She also has a Certificate in GHG Accounting from the GHG Management Institute as well as a Certificate in Decision Making in Climate Change from the University of Washington.

May 2012: Joint Erosion Planning & Long-Lining Offshore (2 Topics)

May’s forum will feature two topics. The first topic is the City of Corpus Christi and Nueces County Joint Erosion Planning. Speakers will include Mr. Robert Payne, Mr. Greg Smith, and Mr. Fred McCutchon.

The second topic will feature Bill Blome from the Pew Environmental Trust on Gulf Fishing, who will discuss Pew’s Gulf Surface Longlining Campaign and possible policy changes that NOAA is considering  for the management of Atlantic bluefin tuna.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) may consider using oil spill restoration funds to help create a fishing gear transition program in the Gulf of Mexico. These funds could help surface longline fishermen shift to low-impact alternative gears.
