Earth Day/Bay Day

Shared Ecosystem Matamoros/
Corpus Christi

REPORTE DE INTERCAMBIO AMBIENTAL

Iniciamos el dia visitando Al faro
de Puerto Isabel, Despues
recorrimos a la Isla del Padre
para saber Donde se une el
Golfo de Mexico con la Laguna
Madre si hay una tormenta.

Collecting Specimens in Lower Laguna Madre.

One of the main objectives of the project is
to create an awareness that the Upper Laguna
Madre of Texas and the Lower Laguna Madre
of Texas and Tamaulipas are connected and
a part of a shared ecosystem between
Matamoros and Corpus Christi.

Kayaking in Shallow Estes Flats.
Everyone, particpated in a kayaking
excursion to shallow waters that
included crossing over the
Intercoastal Water Way. For
nearly everyone, this was a first
time experience!

Despues fuimos al laboratorio
Costero de la universidad de
Texas donde tienen diferentes
ejemplares vivos y fosiles de
Vida marina, platicamos sobre
Las caracterisitcas de algunos
De ellos y nos proyectaron
parte de la pelicula vida
acuatica superficial o bencton.

Almorzamos y continuamos
Para llegar a la reserva de atascosa y conocer el Espacio donde viven
Animales, y tambien, en
Invierno reciben la visita
De aves migratorias, en esta
Epoca del aņo se inunda
Por lluvias, en el verano
Esta completamente seco;
platicamos por que estas
Aves buscando un mejor clima
y alimento emigran a esa region
mientras termina el invierno.

Spanish Instruction on Whales. A tour
of the University of Texas Coastal
Studies Lab on South Padre Island
revealed fossils of whales and other
marine animals. Maestra Becky from
Colegio Rendon gave a most interesting
explanation of whale habitat in the Gulf of
Mexico...in Spanish.

Reconocimos a ciervos, halcones,
jabalies, y aves regionales, leimos
tambien que, hay temporada para
cazar venados; en esta reserva la
vida se protege para que continue existiendo, encontramos vegetacion
regional o tropical como arboles,
huizaches, mezquites y arbustos.

The Power of V. Students and
teachers went to the Laguna
Atascosa in late May of 2000
and discovered an eerie dry
desert-like wetland area that
serves as a temporary home
for thousands of migratory birds.
Here the students from Cunningham
on the left and students from Colegio
Rendon on the right demonstrate the
power of a "V" that mimics the power
of the v-shaped pattern used by migratory birds.
Inlet stenciling here but not over there.
In April during Earth Day weekend in
Corpus Christi, both groups participated
in an inlet stenciling project with the City
of Corpus Christi Stormwater Department.
The original idea was to conduct a stenciling
project here and to help students from
Matamoros to replicate the project in their
community. This was not possible because
in Matamoros, they do not have the same
kind of public works infrastructure as we do
in most municipalities in the United States.

AL FINAL COMIMOS Y DIALOGAMOS QUEDANDO DE VOLVERNOS A VER EN otoņo PARA CONTINUAR, EL PROYECTO DE NUESTRO MEDIO AMBIENTE.
