EARTH
DAY - BAY DAY 2005
Enjoying
our bays & habitats, now & forever.
PROCLAMATION
(To be read on April 19, 2005)
Whereas, In April, 1988, the first EARTH DAY-BAY DAY celebration
was held in Corpus Christi; and in subsequent years, April
has also become EARTH MONTH in Corpus Christi; and the focus
of EARTH DAY-BAY DAY 2005 is protecting our estuaries and
deltas; and the purpose of every EARTH DAY-BAY DAY is enjoying
our bays & habitats, now & forever; and
Whereas, Since April 22, 1970, when millions of Americans
first took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate
for a healthy and sustainable environment, realizing they
shared common values; and EARTH DAY became the title for annual
celebrations nationwide and locally; and
Whereas, the nation and our own City of Corpus Christi have
come a long way in raising the awareness of residents, elected
officials, businesses and government agencies about the environment,
about how and why our environment needs our protection; and
recognizing the importance of clean unpolluted water in our
own Coastal Bend bays and estuaries, the importance of trash
and litter control, the importance of clean unpolluted air;
the positive economic impact that a healthy environment has;
and recognizing that our combined efforts to clean up our
environment will help to ensure our ability to enjoy and celebrate
our "City By The Sparkling Sea" for many years to
come,
Now, therefore, pursuant to the powers vested in me as Mayor
of the City of Corpus Christi, I do hereby proclaim the Month
of April, as "Earth Month" and "Earth Day/Bay
Day Celebration" (To Be Celebrated on April 23, 2005
at Cole Park)
